DRIVER BIO: Sammy Ives
Sam was born in Kiowa KS on January 12, 1947 where he lived until he graduated from high school in 1965. He had, at the age of five, aspirations of becoming a Pilot when he grew up. At nine years of age he began competition go-kart racing when his grandfather presented him with his first go-kart. Sam and his father, Jimmy, traveled from state-to-state to test his driving skills against his peers and young Sammy proved to be very successful as a competitive kart racer and was a young force to be reckoned with. At the age of 14 Sam stepped up to grass roots sportsman drag racing when his grandfather (again) bought Sam his first car.
In 1966 Sam purchased a 1957 Chevy B210 from the original owner and has been racing the lead sled ever since then at drag strips across the U.S. Since 1998 he has campaigned the ’57 in the Beat The Heat program, an international non-profit “cops and kids” corporation that is partnered with NHRA and the US Army Y.E.S. (Youth Education Services) program and he holds the 2007 Beat The Heat World Championship (Top Cop) title. Sam is also a Reserve Deputy with the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office in Oklahoma and earned his 25-year service award in November 2010.
Sam and his wife Dixie are national spokespersons for the Sheriff’s office as well as for Beat the HEAT inc.
In 1967 Sam entered the United States Navy and served three tours of duty in Viet Nam aboard two different aircraft carriers, the USS Oriskany and the USS Coral Sea, where he worked as a Jet Mechanic. When Sam left the Navy he landed in Tulsa OK where he attended and graduated from Spartan School of Aeronautics obtaining his A&P Mechanic’s license as well as his Pilot’s license. Sam then went to work for Cessna Aircraft in Wichita KS as an A&P Mechanic for the next six years and was also a Flight Instructor in the Cessna Employees Flying Club. While at Cessna Sam landed a corporate flying job and began a 12-year career as a Corporate Pilot for various companies flying the hot rods of the wild blue yonder realizing his boyhood dream of becoming a jet jockey. In 1987 Sam began a 19 year career as a Pilot with Continental Airlines and retired from there in 2006. Throughout his flying career Sam logged over 23,000 flight hours.
Sam and his wife Dixie reside in Broken Arrow OK and formed SDI MOTORSPORTS LLC in 2010 and bought a jet car. It seemed like the perfect fit for Sam with his passion [and need] for speed along with his aviation background.
